Theta Fleet's Vesta-Class specifications are that of the factory default specifications. Some vessels currently active in the Fleet, have been given specific updates, or retrofits, to accommodate less auxiliary craft, in exchange for an increase in crew capacity, as is the case with the U.S.S. Niagara, which uses the reclaimed space for a Marine detachment.

***ADDITIONAL NOTE***

Due to the heavy incorporation with the ship's systems and until the technology could be proven, future Vesta Class vessels will not be fitted with the Quantum Slipstream Drive, Quantum Focus Controller or the Sympathetic Fermion Transceiver.


Description
Two years after the Dominion war in what would be recorded as one of the most costly conflicts to the Federation and the powers of the Alpha Quadrant alike, Starfleet is in a state of reconsolidation and recuperation with the question of how to not only recoup but also revamp Starfleet’s aging fleet to meet the demands of not only Starfleet’s exploratory mission but also to match the new threats which would seek success where the Dominion failed.

Thus, Starfleet Research and Development developed the new Vesta-Class starship. The nimble craft of comparable size to the Sovereign-Class was to become the test bed platform for several of the new and unique technologies to include those discovered by the USS Voyager in her journey home from the Delta Quadrant. Most notably amongst these technologies was the Quantum Slipstream Drive discovered by Voyager in 2374. Using Voyager’s data from the maiden flight, Starfleet Engineers carefully studied the slipstream paying particular attention to the calculations of Harry Kim in an effort to determine a method of creating a more stable slipstream. Other notable technologies to be installed and tested on this new class were;

Sympathetic Fermion Transceiver: Creates a fermion field around the ship design to increase the efficiency, strength and lifespan of the ship’s Ablative armor and Regenerative shields. This technology would reduce the stress taken by the active shield generators of regenerative shields by dissipating a portion of the incoming energy from weapons fire upon impact with the shields transferring this energy to the transceiver itself. In addition the transceiver reduces the negative effects of the boil-off process found in Ablative armor. Each shield generator is affixed with a Fermion Transceiver which will become active when the shield generator is operating at less than 35% efficiency unless a manual override is activated by the Captain.


Note:

- Can't be repaired in battle.
- Shields must be active for use.
- When the ship is hit 25% of the damage goes to the device, 25 to charging overall shields- remaining 50% generates heat around the ship.
- Can only be used for ~30 mins of sustained heavy combat before the heat will become unmanageable to occupants.


Quantum Field Focus Controller (Source: Memory Beta):

Allows the starship to keep shields and communication online and at 100% during slipstream travel. It could also be used as a beam intensifier. If the ship is heavily damaged and the field focuser is still online, power from the phasers and shields could be rerouted to the main deflection system and be used to ether create a shield bubble or a high intensity phaser beam which could be sustained for as long as power can be routed to the deflector array.

The first Vesta-Class vessel to be constructed with this new technology would be a prototype carrying the class’ namesake in the USS Vesta (NX-80000). The ship was commissioned under the command of Captain Devlin Scott, a seasoned and trusted engineer whom would take the Vesta on it’s maiden gathering data on the new class before Starfleet would see addition Vesta’s constructed and placed into service.

Initial testing was promising with the Fermion Transceiver showing to make the Vesta far more robust in combat versus the sole use of it’s conventional shields. In addition the Vesta was able to achieve short flights in slipstream with stable transmission of data and continual operation of the shields. Having conducted the necessary initial trials, Captain Scott was looking to bolder horizons towards a much longer flight. Reluctantly Starfleet agreed to allow the Vesta to partake in a longer flight. The results of the flight were disasterous. After only fifteen minutes of flight time, the slipstream began to cause adverse effects on the ship’s primary and secondary hull causing the craft to destabilize. The ship was still intact when Starfleet lost contact with the Vesta, the fate nor location of the ship was never determined. It was considered lost with all hands. It was decreed by Starfleet engineering that any future Vestas were to be built with an enhanced conventional warp drive which still placed the vessel ahead of it’s predecessors such as the Sovereign. The other experimental technology would be fitted in at the discretion of Starfleet Engineering upon the commissioning of the vessel.

After years of research, investigation and deliberation into the incident, Starfleet decided to once again to commission a Vesta-Class vessel as it was originally intended. The USS Niagara was chosen as the new test platform with the vessel requiring extensive repairs and a new propulsion system allowing for the installation of the Quantum Slipstream Drive following an incident within an unknown spacial rift. The new project would then be carefully supervised by both Starfleet R & D and Vice Admiral Veronica Constantine, the ship’s Commanding Officer.
