Launched in 2371 the Negh'Var is the most recent Klingon capital ship design, also the largest and most heavily armed to date. As such, this battleship outperforms any but the most advanced warship designs of the known universe. It was designed to counter Starfleet's Sovereign class project as well as to take on a D'deridex class warbird with relative ease.

Outwardly, the Negh'Var is a new design that only roughly keeps with Klingon design tradition. Certainly a culture with a taste for the dramatic, the Klingons succeeded in giving the Negh'Var a menacing look. Proof that this was deliberate are two thorn-shaped protrusions just ahead of the warp nacelles that serve no other purpose and indeed slightly reduce the effectiveness of the Bussard collectors.

The first test of the Negh'Var came during the Klingon-Cardassian war as well as the renewed hostilities between the Federation and the Klingon Empire in 2372. The Negh'Var proved her effectiveness not only by successfully taking out Deep Space Nine's heavy, recently upgraded shielding but also by withstanding the station's fire, something the other Klingon ships participating in the assault did not fare so well at.

While the battle ended in a draw, the Negh'Var proved that her primary armament, two forward-firing heavy disrupter cannons mounted on protruding pods below her primary hull, were every bit as effective as the vessel's designers had claimed. These weapons have two essential drawbacks, however, a rather slow rate of fire as well as a very limited firing arc. As the Negh'Var's size makes her a rather ponderous vessel these weapons are largely ineffective in ship to ship combat but lethal when deployed against static defences such as starbases, orbital weapons platforms and planetary shields.

To defend herself against other vessels, the Negh'Var is equipped with no fewer than 24 dirsupter banks, easily the equivalent of Starfleet's type X phaser banks, and six pulse fire torpedoes, four forward and two aft. As such the Negh'Var is a capable warship and has acquired a fearsome reputation.

The Negh'Var carries a large store of equipment for ground operations and many warriors into battle. These are also used to seize enemy vessels and space stations, as there is more glory to be won in taking over rather than destroying the enemy's ships and installations.

In spite of the Negh'Var's obvious success the vessel remains a rarity in the Klingon fleet. Indeed, so prohibitive are the costs for building and maintaining a Negh'Var class battleship that a mere thirty have been built in the first fifteen years since the class was fielded. The Klingon Empire has no plans on selling the vessel to anybody, unlike other warship types.
