Intrepid class light cruisers are the only capital ships in Starfleet equipped with the ability to not only land on a planetary surface but also take off again without the need for external aid.

The Intrepid class design process was started in the late 2360s, intended to be produced as a light cruiser when the Steamrunner's production run ended in 2371. With the U.S.S. Intrepid a ground breaking computer technology was included, bio-neural gel packs. These increased the processing speeds of the ship's computer as compared to older models using isolinear ships.

The U.S.S. Intrepid was, at the time she was commissioned, the fastest ship in Starfleet, with a maximum sustained velocity of warp 9.975. Along with advances in shielding technology this made the Intrepid one of the most versatile ships in the fleet, the only capital ship able to navigate the plasma storms of the Badlands with a reasonable degree of safety.

The Intrepid class design was called into question by Starfleet after the loss of the U.S.S. Voyager, the second Intrepid class ship to be commissioned, in 2371. Fitted specifically for a mission against the Maquis in the Badlands this design requirement for the class was deemed a failure when the Voyager was apparently lost with all hands. Production of the class was halted and only resumed a year later, after careful examination revealed no problems.

Size limitations in the Intrepid design have led to unconventional choices in placing the phaser armament. Two type IX arrays are placed on the dorsal and two more on the ventral surface of the saucer, a fifth array is found on the ship's underbelly, the ventral surface of the engineering hull. A total of six type IX phaser banks, using the same emitter class but a smaller number of individual emitters, are placed on the underside of the nacelle pylons, on the far aft of the ventral saucer section and on the underside of the rear-most section of the engineering hull. A further five type VIII phaser banks are placed two just above the aft torpedo launchers, one on the ventral surface of each warp nacelle and the fifth one behind the secondary tractor beam emitter.

The combination of these phaser emitters gives the Intrepid class excellent coverage at all angles, the relatively small number of torpedoes carried limit the offensive capabilities of the vessel type, however. Classed as a light cruiser the Intrepid class's speed allow it to function as a tactical scout, able to outrun most opponents trying to intercept and destroy her.

Carrying a crew of 150 the Intrepid class is equipped only with a small sickbay but was the first vessel to pioneer the Emergency Medical Hologram, or EMH, which proved highly successful aboard U.S.S. Voyager, serving as the only medical officer on the ship for a duration of seven years.

Compared with her predecessor, the Steamrunner class, the Intrepid class has a much better accommodation standard for the crew, including large personal quarters and several holodecks. The class is popular with her crews and remains in production. As of 2387 there are 61 Intrepid class ships in service.
