Come, my friends,
'Tis not too late to seek a newer world. .
. . To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.

The New Orleans class is a distant cousin to the Galaxy family, designed and fielded in the 2360s many of the same principles were used in building the ship. The saucer section is similar to that of the Cheyenne, a scaled-down version of the Galaxy class.

Originally the New Orleans was intended as a surveyor, basically a larger version of the Oberth class. That was changed at the last minute when Starfleet decided they needed to up-gun the class as the potential for tensions with the Cardassians rose. While peace was kept, eventually, the Borg threat a few years later meant Starfleet was desperate to field more fire power and soon.

The design of the ship was almost completed and the internal volume of the ship was already filled with other equipment when Starfleet decided to add two additional torpedo launchers. To facilitate this with the New Orleans class the one launcher already present was removed to make room for torpedo storage and three pods were created that were affixed to the outside of the hull, allowing the New Orleans to carry three burst fire launchers of the same type used by the Ambassador class.

This gives the New Orleans class an unprecedented torpedo fire power, similar to the much larger Akira class. The major disadvantage to the design is the restriction the design places on manoeuvrability and the direct exposure of the pods to incoming enemy fire. This was met by increasing armour plating around the pods.

In the role of a frigate the New Orleans has proven incredibly successful. It is one of Starfleet's more capable designs in terms of combat performance. The New Orleans is also popular with her crews, a high power shield grid ensures good survivability.

While class production has ended in 2379 the New Orleans class is expected to remain in service well into the 25th century. Seventeen ships have been lost, three retired due to battle damage and eighty-two remain in service.
